ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION
There are two main costs when inseminating a mare apart from the cost of the semen. These are the seasonal veterinary fee and the agistment costs
- Veterinary expenses include ultrasound scanning up to three times daily
and the use of numerous drugs to manipulate the mare's oestrus cycle. We offer
mare owners a fixed Veterinary cost of $500* which covers all scanning and pregnancy tests for up to three cycles. Drug costs are not covered in the seasonal fee but usually are less than $50. Injuries and illnesses are also not
covered by the fixed fee.
- Agistment costs vary according to the stage the mare is at in her oestrus
cycle. While the mare is under lights in a loose box, being hand fed and having
to be mucked out twice daily the charge is $20* per day. This happens while
she is in oestrus and probably lasts about six days per cycle. In between
oestrus periods, (di-oestrus ) the charge drops to $10* per day.
NATURAL COVER
Once again the costs are divided between a seasonal veterinary fee and agistment costs
- In natural cover the amount of scanning is less and therefore the seasonal fee is only $250*. Once again there will be some drug costs and illnesses and injuries are not covered.
- Agistment costs are the same for natural cover or for artificial insemination.
Other costs like worming, farriery etc can occur but these would be only
after consultation with the owner.
